The Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) had called a two-day strike which had seriously impeded the Rs one billion worth trading activity in Erode district. The council has been demanding prohibition on cotton exports.

According to the South India Textile Manufacturers Association, most of the power looms in Erode, Chennimalai, Anthiyur and Sivagiri took part in the strike.

The association called for the Central government's intervention in order to take measures to bar the export of cotton without any further delay.
