Department of Environment (DoE) in a bid to check environmental violations penalized two factories at the Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) with a fine of around Tk 3.3 billion for contaminating water.

A group of DoE officials headed by Department's Enforcement Director has initiated a drive to check environmental violations.

The unprocessed chemical and liquid effluents that the two factories discharged were found flowing through CEPZ's sewer and in to the Bay of Bengal.

Further, the DoE team also found the Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) used by these companies to be defective.

The team also carried out some chemical examinations which revealed that, violative of the standards, the dissolved oxygen level in the liquid effluents discharged by both the factories was very high.
