In spite of the repeated appeals from the Supreme Council for Armed Forces to put an end to the countrywide strikes, workers of the Misr Spinning and Weaving textile factory in Mahalla have once again started a strike to back their demand for higher wages.
Workers from Egypt's biggest textile factory had once again started a strike in order to support their demand for higher wages and better working conditions on February 16, in spite of the repeated calls from the country's new military administrators that such strikes would be devastating for the country as well as the workers. The workers had withdrawn a strike about four days ago.
In 2010, the minimum wage of the workers had been increased by a court ruling from 400 LE ($68) to 1200 LE ($204) but this has not been implemented across Egypt till now.
The strike was called following the appeal of the Supreme Council for Armed Forces to all workers to stop the strikes and resume their work. The council also warned them about the adverse effect of labour opposition particularly on the economy of the country.
