The number and rate of US job openings remained unchanged at 7.7 million and 4.6 per cent respectively in October this year, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS).

The number of federal government job openings decreased by 25,000 in the month.

Over the month, both hires and total separations were little changed at 5.1 million. Within separations, both quits (2.9 million) and layoffs and discharges (1.9 million) were little changed. 

In October, the rate of hires was little changed at 3.2 per cent. Hires were little changed in all industries.

Total separations include quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations. In October, the rate of total separations was little changed at 3.2 per cent. The number of total separations decreased by 34,000 in the federal government, a BLS release said.

In October, the number and rate of quits were little changed at 2.9 million and 1.8 per cent respectively.

The number of quits was down by 276,000 year on year (YoY) in the month.
