Bangladesh’s Minimum Wage Board has reportedly proposed a 65-per cent pay hike on an average in the salaries of entry-level workers of the cotton textile sector. Their monthly basic payment has been proposed to be raised to Tk 5,000 for all workers of grade 10 from Tk 3,600 now.

It has proposed a house rent of 70 per cent, 65 per cent and 60 per cent of the basic pay respectively for workers at the divisional, district and sub-district levels, according to a domestic newspaper.

The board has also recommended Tk 750 and Tk 850 as medical and food allowances for all entry level workers and Tk 600, Tk 500 and Tk 400 as transportation allowance for workers at the division, district and sub-district levels respectively.

The last such wage for grade 10 workers of the sector was fixed in 2018 at Tk 5,710, Tk 5,990 and Tk 7,170 for the above three levels respectively.

A gazette notification would be issued shortly, seeking opinions, objections if any, before the ministry finalises the minimum monthly wage for the sector, the newspaper reported.

The decision follows protest demonstrations in several industrial areas demanding pay hikes amid high inflation and rising living costs.
