US trade & manufacturing see slight gains in August 2023

The combined value of US’ distributive trade sales and manufacturers’ shipments for August 2023 was estimated at $1,857.2 billion, indicating a growth of 1.3 per cent compared to July 2023, according to the US Census Bureau. In a year-on-year comparison, the figures showed a marginal rise of 0.2 per cent from August 2022.

In related data, the end-of-month level for manufacturers' and trade inventories in August 2023 was estimated to be $2,548.7 billion. This represents an increase of 0.4 per cent from July 2023 and a 1 per cent rise from the same month in the previous year.

At the end of August 2023, the total business inventories to sales ratio was recorded at 1.37, based on seasonally adjusted data. This shows a subtle increase compared to the ratio of 1.36 recorded in August 2022, as per the census bureau.
