Water cost highest in China, lowest in Pak among textile exporters

An analysis of economic data revealed that in 2023, the water cost in China was $0.34 per cubic metre, compared to $0.08 per cubic metre in Pakistan. Among other textile exporting countries, Bangladesh's water cost was $0.14 per cubic metre, India's was $0.10 per cubic metre, and Vietnam's was $0.29 per cubic metre.

The water cost in China eased to $0.34 in 2023, down from $0.36 per cubic metre in 2022. It remained stable in 2021 and 2020 but was $0.35 per cubic metre in 2019 and $0.36 per cubic metre in 2018. Vietnam, the second most costly textile exporting country, also witnessed a decline in water cost in 2023, which fell to $0.29 from $0.30 per cubic metre in 2022. The cost was recorded at $0.29 in 2021, $0.28 in 2020, and $0.26 per cubic metre in both 2019 and 2018, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

In Bangladesh, the water cost decreased to $0.14 in 2023, down from $0.15 per cubic metre in 2022. The cost was recorded at $0.17 per cubic metre in both 2021 and 2020, and $0.13 per cubic metre in both 2019 and 2018. In Pakistan, the water cost increased to $0.08 in 2023, up from $0.06 per cubic metre in 2022. It was the only nation to record an upward trend in water cost in 2023 compared to the previous year. Previously, the cost remained steady at $0.05 per cubic metre from 2018 to 2021, as per TexPro.

Interestingly, India experienced stability in water cost over the last six years. The cost remained unchanged at $0.10 per cubic metre throughout this period.
