Bangladesh garment exports swell 14.66% in Q1 FY19

Readymade garment exports from Bangladesh increased by 14.66 per cent in the first three months of current fiscal 2018-19 to $8.191 billion compared to exports of $7.144 billion in the corresponding months of the previous year, according to data from the Export Promotion Bureau. The percentage increase in garment exports during July-September 2018-19 was slightly lower than 14.75 per cent growth in overall exports from Bangladesh during the same period.
 
Category-wise, knitwear exports rose 12.27 per cent to $4.206 billion in the first three months of fiscal 2018-19, as against exports of $3.746 billion during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, as per the data.
 
Likewise, exports of woven apparel increased 17.30 per cent to $3.984 billion during the period under review, compared to exports of $3.397 billion during July-September 2017-18.
 
Woven and knitted apparel and clothing accessories’ exports together accounted for 82.4 per cent of $9.940 billion worth of total exports made by Bangladesh during the July-September quarter.
 
In the last fiscal ending June 30, 2018, garment exports from Bangladesh crossed the $30-billion mark and surpassed the target by 1.51 per cent. For the current fiscal, the Government of Bangladesh has set readymade garments export target at $32.689 billion. (RKS)
