Currently, Bangladeshi garments face a 26 per cent duty at US ports. This includes a 16 per cent regular duty and an additional 10 per cent base duty imposed in April. Although Trump had paused reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, he imposed a flat 10 per cent tariff during that period. However, from August 1, Bangladeshi garments will face a 35 per cent duty. The country has urged the US to maintain the current tariff rates on its garment exports.
Bangladesh succeeded in raising its market share to double digits in the first quarter of this year. The US imported apparel worth $2.220 billion from Bangladesh during this period, accounting for 10.56 per cent of its total apparel imports of $21.034 billion. Imports from Bangladesh rose by 26.64 per cent compared to $1.753 billion in the same quarter of the previous year. Bangladesh's share also increased from 9.26 per cent in the corresponding period last year, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.
The US imported apparel worth $7.401 billion from Bangladesh in 2024, out of a total of $83.684 billion in garment imports, giving Bangladesh a market share of 8.89 per cent for the year.
In comparison, Bangladesh's apparel exports to the US were valued at $7.248 billion in 2023 and $9.807 billion in 2022. Its market share was recorded at 8.89 per cent in 2023 and 9.32 per cent in 2022, as per TexPro.
