Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) exports (Chapter 61 and 62) saw a significant increase of 13.07 per cent to $11.617 billion in July-September, the first quarter of fiscal 2023-24, according to provisional data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). The figure for the same period in 2022 was $10.274 billion. While knitwear exports outpaced woven garments, the overall RMG exports fell short of the $11.793 billion target set for July-September 2023 by 1.49 per cent.

Exports of knitwear (Chapter 61) increased by 19.70 per cent to $6.762 billion in the first three months of current fiscal, as against exports of $5.649 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal 2022-23.

Exports in knitwear (Chapter 61) grew by an impressive 19.70 per cent, totalling $6.762 billion, compared to $5.649 billion in the same period the previous fiscal. On the other hand, woven apparel exports (Chapter 62) increased by 4.97 per cent to $4.854 billion from $4.624 billion in July-September 2022, as per EPB data.

However, home textile exports (Chapter 63, excluding 630510) experienced a decline, dropping by 46.39 per cent to $189.50 million, as against $353.48 million in the comparable period in 2022. Collectively, woven and knitted apparel, clothing accessories, and home textile exports made up 86.85 per cent of Bangladesh's total exports, which amounted to $13.685 billion for the quarter.

Despite a global economic slowdown, Bangladesh has demonstrated resilience, with RMG exports for fiscal 2022-23 reaching $46.991 billion, up from $42.613 billion in fiscal 2021-22 and $31.456 billion in fiscal 2020-21.
