  • Cambodia's apparel exports fell 16.5 per cent to $6.47 billion in January-October 2023, accounting for 34.8 per cent of the country's total foreign income.
  • The drop spans both knitted and non-knitted clothing categories, driven by reduced global demand.
  • This decrease starkly contrasts with the previous year's 12.69 per cent increase in apparel exports.
Apparel exports from the Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia declined by 16.50 per cent to $6,469.517 million in the first ten months of 2023, accounting for 34.8 per cent of the country’s total foreign income of $18,552.356 million for the period, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), under the ministry of economy and finance.

During the period under review, Cambodia’s exports of apparel and clothing accessories (knitted) (Chapter 61) amounted to $4,541.612 million, a decrease of 17.6 per cent compared to $5,513.628 million in the corresponding period of 2022. Likewise, exports of apparel and clothing accessories (not knitted) (Chapter 62) fell by 13.7 per cent to $1,927.905 million, down from $2,234.445 million in January-October 2022. This decline is attributed to reduced global demand.

In October 2023, Cambodia’s apparel exports declined by 5.76 per cent to $540.011 million, compared to $573.049 million in the same month of 2022. The shipment of apparel and clothing accessories (knitted) eased by 1.8 per cent to $396.374 million, down from $403.551 million during the corresponding month of the last year. Meanwhile, exports of apparel and clothing accessories (not knitted) declined by 15.3 per cent to $143.637 million in October 2023.

In terms of imports, the value of Cambodia’s knitted or crocheted fabric (Chapter 60) imports from January to October 2023 was $2,194.698 million, a decline of 13.8 per cent compared to $2,545.631 million in the same period of 2022. Imports of man-made fibre (Chapter 55) fell by 10.7 per cent to $900.855 million, compared to $1,008.341 million in the corresponding period last year. Meanwhile, cotton and cotton yarn (Chapter 52) imports increased by 6.5 per cent, reaching $451.639 million during the period under review, up from $424.244 million in the same period of 2022.

The significant drop in exports during the first ten months of the year indicates a slowdown in Cambodia’s apparel exports. In contrast, last year the country’s apparel exports increased by 12.69 per cent, reaching $9.035 billion.
