  • Cambodia's apparel exports saw a 17.36 per cent drop to $5.93 billion in the first nine months of 2023, making up nearly 35 per cent of its total foreign income.
  • The decline is attributed to reduced global demand.
  • Meanwhile, imports of knitted fabric and manmade fibre also fell, signalling a slowdown in one of Cambodia's main economic sectors.
Cambodia's apparel exports declined by 17.36 per cent to $5,929.507 million in the first nine months of 2023, making up 34.98 per cent of its total foreign income of $17,077.304 million for the period, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) under the ministry of economy and finance.

During the period under review, Cambodia's exports of apparel and clothing accessories (knitted) (Chapter 61) amounted to $4,145.238 million, a decrease of 18.9 per cent compared to $5,110.077 million in the corresponding period of 2022. Exports of apparel and clothing accessories (not knitted) (Chapter 62) fell by 13.6 per cent to $1,784.269 million, down from $2,064.946 million in January-September 2022. This decline is attributed to reduced global demand.

In September 2023, Cambodia's apparel exports declined by 3.9 per cent to $689.683 million, compared to $707.306 million in the same month of 2022. The shipment of apparel and clothing accessories (knitted) eased by 1.1 per cent to $506.406 million, down from $512.265 million during the corresponding period last year. Meanwhile, exports of apparel and clothing accessories (not knitted) declined by 6 per cent to $183.277 million in September 2023.

Regarding imports, the value of Cambodia's knitted or crocheted fabric (Chapter 60) imports from January to September 2023 was $1,990.190 million, a decline of 16.4 per cent compared to $2,380.355 million in the same period of 2022. Imports of manmade fibre (Chapter 55) fell by 11.8 per cent to $808.657 million, compared to $916.897 million in the corresponding period last year. Meanwhile, cotton and cotton yarn (Chapter 52) imports increased by 4.8 per cent, reaching $410.808 million during the period under review, up from $392.064 million in the same period of 2022.

The significant drop in exports during the first nine months of the year indicates a slowdown in Cambodia's apparel exports. In contrast, last year the country's apparel exports increased by 12.69 per cent, reaching $9.035 billion.
