In 2022, the value of apparel exports to South Africa was recorded at $1,304.098 million, compared to $1,296.588 million in 2021. It slipped to $1,009.587 million in 2020 from $1,234.412 million in 2019. However, after recovery from COVID, the shipment bounced back in 2021, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.
In terms of volume, China exported 482.620 million garments in 2022, against 504.415 million in 2021. This shows that the total value of the shipment increased in 2022, but the quantity decreased. Earlier, China exported 405.935 million garments in 2020 and 505.971 million garments in 2019, as per TexPro.
The total value of shipments in previous years remained positive due to the increasing average value per unit. The average value per garment was $2.44 in 2019, and it increased by 13.93 per cent over the last four years to $3.78 per unit in the first five months of 2023. Earlier, the average per garment price was $2.70 in 2022, $2.58 in 2021, $2.49 in 2020, and $2.44 in 2019.
