China largest apparel supplier for Switzerland, shipment at $1.8 bn

China and Switzerland are looking to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas after the recent visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Zurich. In textile trade, China is the largest garment supplier for the European country with a market share of over 25 per cent.

During the official visit to the European country, Li Qiang and Swiss President Viola Amherd engaged in candid exchanges on a special train from Zurich to Bern, the capital of Switzerland.

According to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro, Switzerland’s apparel imports from China were worth $1.818 billion during January-October 2023 which was 26.13 per cent of its total imports of $6.960 billion in the same period. China’s share was 1.79 per cent in total Swiss apparel exports of $2.497 billion during the period. China was seventh largest market for the outbound shipment from Switzerland.

In 2022, China’s share was 26.69 per cent of total apparel imports of $8.150 billion by the European country. The shipment from China was valued at $2.175 billion during 2022. On the other hand, Switzerland had exported apparel worth $2.831 billion, out of which China’s share was 2.36 per cent, and was the sixth largest market for Swiss apparel exports.

Swiss trade of fabric and yarn is mainly dominant in European countries, but China is also a major trading partner in these products. For example, Switzerland imported fabric worth $302.959 million in January-October 2023. China was the seventh largest source among the ten top suppliers, which are mostly European countries, as per TexPro.

Swiss home textiles imports stood at $819.218 million in the first ten months of 2023. China was the second largest supplier as the inbound shipment from the country was valued at $153.227 million, which was 18.70 per cent of the total.
