Quoting the Global Port Tracker Report, the National Retail Federation (NRF) said imports at US major retail container ports are forecast to rise 4.6 per cent in the first half of 2017, as against the same period of 2016. NRF has expressed optimism on the growth in imports, following the improvement in the nation’s economy and growth in retail sales.

According to NRF, the January 2017 numbers would bring the first half of 2017 to 9.4 million TEU, expanding by 4.6 per cent over the first half of 2016. This growth will be almost three times the 1.6 per cent growth seen in the first half of 2016, over the same period in 2015.

The report estimated imports in January 2017 at 1.59 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU), a rise of 6.6 per cent over January 2016, while February is forecast at 1.53 million TEU, down 0.6 per cent over the same month in the prior year. (AR)
