India held a 5.95 per cent share as the fourth-largest apparel supplier to the US. The total US apparel imports reached $63.611 billion in the first nine months of 2023, with China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh leading ahead of India. These top three suppliers accounted for more than 48 per cent of the total US apparel imports, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.
US imports of apparel from India were recorded at $4.897 billion during January-September 2022, which was 52.67 per cent higher than the $3.208 billion shipment in the same period of 2021.
In 2022, India's share was 5.70 per cent ($6.002 billion) of the US' total apparel imports of $105.220 billion. India was positioned as the fourth-largest supplier after China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. The shipment jumped by 33.66 per cent from $4.490 billion in 2021. Previously, US apparel imports from India were noted at $3.201 billion in 2020, $4.254 billion in 2019, and $3.874 billion in 2018, as per TexPro.
Another analysis of trade data shows that shirts dominated US apparel imports during January-September 2023. The inbound shipment of shirts was valued at $888.708 million, comprising 24.05 per cent of the total apparel imports in the same period. The inbound shipment of dresses accounted for 17.75 per cent, trousers and shorts 10.07 per cent, jerseys 9.99 per cent, T-shirts 8.42 per cent, babywear 6.20 per cent, innerwear 7.55 per cent, nightwear 2.59 per cent, skirts 1.87 per cent, and jackets and blazers 1.31 per cent of the total apparel imports.
