During his three-day visit to India from October 28 to 30, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez discussed various issues with his counterpart Narendra Modi. Both countries are working to increase cooperation in several areas, and there is an opportunity to enhance their bilateral trade in textile sector also. Currently, India is the eighth largest apparel supplier to Spain.

During their meeting, Modi told his Spanish counterpart that India is keen to re-energise bilateral relations, while the Spanish Prime Minister said that his country is looking forward to advancing the great cooperation.

According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, Spain imported apparel worth $519.673 million from India in January-July 2024, which was 4.58 per cent of its total imports of $11.346 billion. In terms of apparel supply to Spain, India is lagging behind Bangladesh, China, Turkiye, Morocco, Cambodia, Italy and Pakistan. The import from India was slightly higher than the Spanish inbound shipment of $509.960 million in January-July 2023.

During the year 2023, Spain had imported $704.382 million of apparel from India, which was 3.49 per cent of its total imports of $20.165 million. India was ranked at ninth among the leading apparel suppliers.

Spain’s imports of home textiles from India were lesser at $96.988 million in first seven months of the current year. But India was ranked as the third largest supplier with a share of 10.67 per cent as the partner country’s imports of the textile products totalled at $908.751 in the same period. Only China and Pakistan were ahead of India in terms of home textiles suppliers.

Spain had imported home textiles valued at $100.800 million from India in the same period of the last year. It was 10.81 per cent of its total imports of home textiles of $932.615 million. The country’s imports from India stood at $170.850 million in calendar year 2023, accounting for 11.03 per cent of total home textiles imports of $1,548.334 million by Spain.

The western country’s imports of fabric totalled as $1,006.393 million in January-July 2024. Its inbound shipment from India stood at $20.316 million, just 2.02 per cent of the total. The imports were noted at $927.271 million in January-July 2023, out of which the imports from India were just $17.684 million, as per TexPro.

Spain’s fabric imports were noted at $1,463.484 million in the year 2023, out of which its imports from India were at $26.656 million in the same period.
