Japan's clothing imports rise 9.5% to 1,516,123 mn yen in Jan-Jun 2023

Japan's imports of clothing and accessories reached 1,576,123 million yen ($11,176.35 million) in the first half (H1) of the 2023 calendar year, a 9.5 per cent increase from the same period last year. These imports accounted for 2.9 per cent of the total imports amounting to 54,314,313 million yen, as per the provisional trade statistics provided by the country's ministry of finance. 

Meanwhile, imports of textile yarn and fabric during January to June 2023 were valued at 569,033 million yen, a 1.6 per cent decrease compared to the same period the previous year. These imports accounted for one per cent of Japan's total imports. 

In H1 2023, Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric were valued at 370,584 million yen, marking a 2 per cent increase year-on-year. Notably, the country's textile machinery exports rose to 160,699 million yen, a significant 15.3 per cent increase from the first half of 2022. These exports contributed 0.3 per cent to the country's total exports. 

In June 2023, imports of clothing and accessories decreased by 2.2 per cent to 239,512 million yen (approximately $1,698.39 million), which represented 2.8 per cent of the total imports amounting to 8,701,010 million yen. The value of imports for textile yarn and fabric was 96,383 million yen, a 11.7 per cent decline. However, Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric were valued at 69,153 million yen, a slight decrease of 1.6 per cent year-on-year. Interestingly, the country's textile machinery exports rose to 26,142 million yen, a significant increase of 30.2 per cent. 

In fiscal 2023 (April-March), Japan's imports of clothing and accessories reached 3,619,550 million yen (approximately $25,046.36 million), reflecting a substantial increase of 26.1 per cent compared to the previous fiscal. The imports of textile yarn and fabric were valued at 1,275,608 million yen, indicating a growth of 23.2 per cent. During FY23, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric worth 776,999 million yen, while the exports of textile machinery were valued at 306,781 million yen.
