Japan's clothing imports stable in H1 2019

Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories were stable with a slight drop of 0.8 per cent year-on-year to 1,463.817 billion yen ($13.47 billion) in the first half (H1) of 2019. Of this, 92.38 per cent or 1,352.365 billion yen ($12.45 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, according to trade statistics from the ministry of finance.

Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 811.650 billion yen ($7.47 billion), a decline of 6 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.

During January-June 2019, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 80.881 billion yen ($744.27 million) from the EU, up 5.5 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 6.267 billion yen ($57.67 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, down 0.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics increased 2.9 per cent year-on-year to 470.256 billion yen ($4.33 billion) during the period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 413.968 billion yen ($3.81 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 246.861 billion yen ($2.27 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 106.240 billion yen ($977.62 million).

Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 34.902 billion yen ($321.17 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 12.917 billion yen ($118.86 million) during the six-month period. (RKS)
