The country saw a 7.9 per cent year-on-year decline in its textile yarn and fabric imports in the last year, totalling 1,162,088 million yen, which accounted for 1.1 per cent of the total imports.
Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric slightly increased by 2.5 per cent compared to the previous year, reaching 785,570 million yen. Exports of textile machinery also surged by 9.1 per cent from 2022, amounting to 328,832 million yen, contributing 0.3 per cent to the total exports.
In December 2023, Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories fell by 1.6 per cent to 255,996 million yen (approximately $1.731 billion), constituting 2.7 per cent of the nation's total imports, which amounted to 9,586,085 million yen. The country also saw an 8.4 per cent year-on-year decline in its textile yarn and fabric imports in December 2023, totalling 91,824 million yen, which accounted for 1.0 per cent of the total imports.
Japan's exports of textile yarn and fabric increased by 7 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 77,401 million yen in December 2023. However, the exports of textile machinery dropped by 4.9 per cent from December 2022, amounting to 25,872 million yen, contributing 0.3 per cent to the total exports.
For fiscal 2022-23, which runs from April to March, Japan's imports of clothing and accessories soared to 3,619,550 million yen (approximately $25.05 billion), marking a significant 26.1 per cent growth from the previous fiscal. Imports of textile yarn and fabric reached 1,275,608 million yen, noting a 23.2 per cent increase. During FY23, Japan exported textile yarn and fabric valued at 776,999 million yen, and textile machinery exports totalled 306,781 million yen.
