Garment sector, the biggest foreign exchange earning industry of Cambodia, registered a 9.9 percent year-on-year rise in exports during the first three quarters of the current year.

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce data, against January-September 2011’s exports of US$ 3.13 billion, around US$ 3.44 billion worth of garment products were shipped to foreign countries during the first nine months of the current year.

While demand from the EU and the US markets remained sluggish, this was balanced by a sharp rise in exports to Asian countries, particularly Japan, as Japanese firms are setting up their units in Cambodia.

Van Sou Ieng, Chairman of the Garment Manufacturers' Association in Cambodia (GMAC) said the association is currently exploring prospects of increasing exports to the Chinese market, as the volume of Cambodian garment exports to China remains low at present.
