Cambodia imported 79,217 tons of second-hand garments worth US$ 61.5 million during the first eleven months of last year, registering a growth of 2 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The import of second-hand apparels was nearly 10 times the amount of new clothing imported by the country during the period.

From January to November 2012, Cambodia imported 8,134 tons of new garments, pegged at US$ 2.6 million.

Industry analysts attribute the phenomenal volume of second-hand garment imports to growing middle-class in the country, which finds them to be of similar quality as the new ones, but at much lower cost, often at about 10 to 40 percent of the price of new ones.

There are about 450-500 garment and textile manufacturing units in the Southeast Asian nation, which mainly produce for export markets.
