Footwear raw material imports rise slightly

Vietnam footwear industry imports almost all raw materials despite its production and export witnessing progressive development.

In week from February 13-17, 2006, prices of certain imported materials for footwear sector increased slightly in comparison with the previous week period. The table below shows the details.

In the past several months, price of imported shoelaces are rather stable, or fluctuating between US $0.15 to $ 0.25 per pair (medium size) and between $ 0.35 to $ 0.6 per pair (large size).

In 2005, Vietnam footwear industry spent up to $ 29.1 millions on importing shoelaces, accounting for 2 percent of total import value of footwear materials of Vietnam.

Besides footwear, Vietnamese enterprises have achieved significant production and export turnover in other leather goods such as bag, backpack, wallet, hat and umbrella.

Sweden is top importer of these goods. In January 2006, Vietnamese enterprises exported $1.31 million value worth products to this Northern European country, a 217.78 percent rise recorded during same period of 2005. This is the highest growth within one year.
