Vietnam's garment exports swell 16.7% in Jan-May'13

The exports of garments and textiles fetched US$ 6.39 billion for Vietnam during the first five months of the current year, registering a rise of 16.7 percent year-on-year, according to the figures released by the General Statistics Office (GSO).
 
In May 2013, Vietnam exported clothing and textiles worth US$ 1.4 billion, showing a growth of 12.9 percent over US$ 1.24 billion exports made in April this year.
 
The apparel and textile sector turned out to be the second biggest foreign exchange earner for Vietnam, accounting for 12.8 percent of the country’s overall exports.
 
Vietnam’s garment and textile industry is optimistic about growth prospects this year, and is expecting exports to be in the range of US$ 18.8 billion to US$ 19.3 billion.
 
Last year, Vietnam’s garment and textile sector registered a turnover of US$ 17.2 billion, growing at 8.5 percent year-on-year.
 
The garment and textile sector in Vietnam employs more than 2 million workers.
