Readymade garments (RMG) were among the products that helped Bangladesh’s overall exports to India grow at 13.15 percent during the Bangladeshi fiscal year 2012-13 that ended on June 30, 2013.

According to the data released by the Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau, Bangladesh’s overall exports to India grew by a healthy 13.15 percent from US$ 498.4 million in 2011-12 to US$ 563.9 million in 2012-13, which is the highest ever level of exports from Bangladesh to India.

On September 6, 2011, India announced duty-free, quota-free access to 46 textile tariff lines of greatest sensitivity to Bangladesh, which is considered a major reason for significant rise in Bangladesh’s exports to India.

Bangladesh is currently India’s largest trading partner among SAARC countries, High Commission of India in Dhaka, said in a media release.

Item-wise break-up of Bangladeshi exports to India reveal that textile fibres, paper yarn, and woven fabric constitute 23.74 percent of the exports, followed by other man made textile articles which constitute 13.8 percent, the release said.

Apparel and accessories accounted for 10.79 percent of total Bangladeshi exports to India during the fiscal year.

The High Commission said initiatives for improving facilities along the land border, including development of seven Integrated Check Posts, improvement of infrastructure at the identified Land Ports / Land Customs Stations and opening of border haats will further contribute to facilitating trade in both directions between the two countries.
