Exports register growth of 17.91% in first eight months

Overall country's exports went up to $1006.09 million rising 17.91 percent in the first eight months of the current financial year on the back of sustained good performance by knitwear sector.
Exports reached $6624.21 million during July-February period for 2005-06 fiscal, which was $5618.12 million during same period previous year, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
Knitwear items earned $2368.91 million against $1819.67 million during same period, previous year registering a rise of 30.18 percent.
Woven garment export grew marginally during July-February period of 2006 with earning revenue worth $2615.48 and posting a growth 8.35 percent over corresponding period, last year.
Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) said knitwear exports were able to rise in some important markets after the phasing out of quota system from January this year.
Knitwear has a strong backward linkage support which will help to continue the trend, hoped the exporters.
BKMEA is campaigning aggressively in some important markets including the US in order to increase its sales.
Besides knitwear, export growth was recorded in leather, raw jute, frozen food, petroleum by products, textile fabrics, bi-cycle and computer services during July-February period of this year, while earnings from home textile, tea and handicrafts declined during the same period.
Jute goods export brought in $239.70 million during the first eight months of the current fiscal, recording a growth of 20.83 percent.
Leather products export earned revenue worth $157.87 million in the eight months period, registering a growth of 15.01 percent over same period of last year.
