Yamatani Eriko, member of Japan’s House of Councillors, has requested the Sri Lankan Government to take steps to increase exports of Sri Lankan apparel to Japan.

Ms. Eriko, who was leading a six-member delegation from the Upper House of Japan’s Diet, said this during a meeting with Rishad Bathiudeen, Sri Lankan Minister of Industry and Commerce in Colombo last week.

She said Sri Lankan apparel are of high quality and are already popular in Japan, but their supply is not sufficient to meet the Japanese market demand at the moment.

With an estimated market size of US$ 122 billion, Japan is one of the three largest apparel markets in the world. In 2012, Sri Lankan garment exports to Japan were valued at US$ 27 million, accounting for less than 1 percent share in terms of revenues in Japanese apparel imports.

On his part, Minister Bathiudeen invited Japanese investment in the Sri Lankan clothing sector.
