According to ADEX, the non-tariff barriers imposed by Argentina on imports of Peruvian clothing in 2011 was the main reason for the sharp decline in Peruvian clothing exports to that country.
Argentina, which earlier ranked 5th for highest exports of apparel from Peru, is now standing at 10th position on the list of main destinations for shipments of Peruvian clothing.
Carlos Gonzalez, manager of ADEX Economic Research said that the protectionist measures imposed by Argentina against Peruvian exports, wherein an Argentine importer is required to export goods in a similar amount as to what he/she imports, has resulted into the sharp decline of Peruvian garment exports to the country.
Mr. Gonzalez said that Peru and Argentina are trading partners and Argentine authorities need to relax the measures in order to boost trade between the two countries.
According to ADEX Trade Data Report, apparel exports from Peru declined from $40.9 million in 2011, to $28.9 million in 2012, and $23.4 million in 2013.
