US apparel imports from Vietnam grow 14% in Jan-May

The imports of apparel by the United States from Vietnam grew at 14.14 per cent to $4.024 billion in January-May 2015 compared to imports of $3.525 billion made in the corresponding period of last year, according to the latest Major Shippers Report, released by the US Department of Commerce.
 
The US apparel imports from China, the main supplier, increased marginally by 0.97 per cent year-on-year to $9.967 billion during the first five months of the current year, the data showed.
 
Bangladesh, the world’s second largest garment exporter, saw its supplies to the US increase by 6.76 per cent year-on-year to $2.222 billion during the period under review.
 
However, the US apparel imports from Indonesia, Mexico and Cambodia dropped by 1.55 per cent year-on-year, 0.18 per cent and 3.05 per cent to $2.078 billion, $1.467 billion and $1.007 billion, respectively, during the initial five months of 2015.
 
Among the top ten apparel suppliers to the US, imports from Sri Lanka, India and Honduras increased by 14.27 per cent, 8.71 per cent and 5.59 per cent respectively to $849.448 million, $1.698 billion and $1.004 billion, according to the report.
 
Overall, the US apparel imports grew slightly by 3.27 per cent to $31.758 billion during January-May 2015, compared to imports of $30.753 billion made during the corresponding period of last year.
 
In 2014, US apparel imports registered around 2.5 per cent growth and they stood at $81.781 billion, as against imports of $79.797 billion made in 2013. (RKS)
