Labour unrest and poor skills of workers in apparel factories could see the export earnings from readymade garments decline by twenty percent this financial year compared to previous year in Bangladesh.

Leaders of Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBHA), said that the export target set at US $8 billion against previous years $7 billion was difficult to achieve considering the above factors.

Labour unrest has seen buyers throng countries like India, Cambodia and Vietnam who are free from labour unrest and workers are more efficient as well.

BGBHA leaders warned that creation of trade unions is further going to hit the industry as the trade politics may force many other companies to lock out.

Ministry of labour and employment has created a fund worth Tk7.0 million to set up a training centre to improve the efficiency of the garment workers even as suggestion has been made to improve the skills of labourers.
