Garment imports swell 4.9% in 2006

In 2006, garments imports of the country stood at 73,257 tons, a year–on–year increase of 4.9 percent.

During this period, exports of the country reached 2,833 tons, up 3.3 percent.

China was biggest exporter of garments in 2006, accounted for 39,213 tons of total exports, followed by Turkey, Bangladesh, Italy and India.

Last year, fabric imports also witnessed sharp rise by reaching 110,408 tons, a surge of 14.2 percent over 2005. China, England, India, Germany, Netherlands and Pakistan remained chief suppliers.

In 2006, fabric exports also witnessed a rise of 9.3 percent by touching 51,082 tons with Germany, Belgium and Swede emerging as the top markets.
