African Growth and Opportunity Act is set to expire 2015 and the Nigerian manufacturers and companies have been encouraged to exploit this act by investing in garment production.
Modupe Sasore, CEO, Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), urged domestic entrepreneurs to indulge in apparel manufacturing to take full advantage of the AGOA.
Sasore said that to remain competitive in global scenario it was crucial to further explore and expand the giant US market, especially, since hand-loomed fabrics and hand-loomed products had been granted duty free access to US.
She called on the Nigerian Customs Service to keep smuggling and illegal activities at the border in check.
The US market is valued at over $12 trillion, of which apparel accounts for over $70 billion.
The CEO also expressed her gratitude towards the US government for extending the third country fabric provision from 2007 to year 2012 as this would prove to be extremely beneficial for Nigeria.
