According to statistics of Manufacturing Production Index (MPI), the industrial output of Nepal has shown a scanty growth of 2.1 percent in first half of current fiscal as compared to last year. The reason for this thin growth is fall in production of textile, garment apparel, among others.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reports that out of 20 sub-sectors listed under MPI, eight showed decline in production, but performance of the rest was also not pleasing.

Only the chemical products sub-sector showed a growth of 10.34 percent in the MPI with soap production increased to 10.32 percent in the first six months of current fiscal year.

The production of garments continued to decrease because of slow international demand for readymade apparels and labor related problems. As per reports, production of garments drops by 12.5 percent during this period.

Pashmina production declined by around eight percent and woolen carpet slumped by 10.96 percent in the first half. But production of these two products had increased by 2.22 percent and 1.75 percent respectively, in the similar period during previous year.
