In the first month of 2009, Thailand's textile and garment exports to the US market fell by 12.5 percent y-o-y, to US $146.9 million largely due to the recessionary trends prevailing in those markets.

From within the sector, garment exports chalked a turnover of $126.1 million, a decline of 9.7 percent, while shipments of textiles touched $20.8 million, down 26.5 percent when compared with the same period in 2008.

Amongst the garment products shipped to the US in the period, cotton garments topped the list with exports of $112.9 million, down 11.5 percent, followed by man–made fibre products worth $54.1 million, also down 10.7 percent.

Garments made from silk slid to $29.5 million, a decline of 5.1 percent when compared with January 2007. The US market was the number one destination for textile and garment products of Thailand origin.
