Exports of clothing to EU plunge sharply in January

According to statistics released by the Vietnamese MOIT, the exports turnover from the textile and garment sector to the EU region in January 2009, stood at just US $102 million, a strong drop of 39 percent against the same month of January 2008.

From amongst the EU region, exports to Germany topped the charts with shipments totaling to $42.3 million and accounting for 41.5 percent of all exports turnover from the textile and garment sector to the European Union.

Germany was followed by Spain with $23.1 million, UK $18.9 million, Netherlands $11.8 million, Italy $11.4 million, France $10.5 million, Belgium $5.4 million and the Czech Republic with $4.1 million.

According to the statistics, during the month, exports of jacket suits to the EU countries grew by 11 percent in volume and 10 percent in value, by shipping 1.7 million units of the jacket suits, amounting to $28.2 million.

It is worthy of note that the export price of shirts to this market rose by 30 percent to an average price of $6.54 per piece, due to which, though export volumes fell by 22 percent, the value of shipments grew by 1 percent in this category.
