According to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), garment exports have fetched US $5.1 billion in the first six months of 2009, which is down by just 1 percent, when compared with that achieved in same period of 2008.

Giving out details, the President of VITAS, Mr Le Quoc An said that despite falling exports to the main markets of Europe and the US, exporters were able to realize growth of nearly 40 percent in shipments to Taiwan, Singapore and Korea.

In the first six months of 2009, Vietnamese clothing exporters gained the distinction of achieving the third position in shipments to Japan and in the process exported $430 million worth of apparels.
