The Union Textiles Minister exhorted all the Export Promotion Councils (EPC's) from the sector, to form a common platform to promote 'Brand India' in overseas markets.

Mr Maran said, acting in unison, would help show the size of the industry in international trade fairs and help attract visitors to the Indian stalls.

Indian apparel shipments have taken a hit since the recessionary trends unfolded last September and are continuing to do in July 2009 too.

Exports from the sector plunged by 6 percent to US $936 million in July 2009, when compared with the same month in 2008, where it stood at $936 million.

India has a very small share of the global textiles and clothing market and has in fact fallen from 3.3 percent to 2.6 percent in 2008-09.
