Lack of availability of yarns and rising prices in the local market have dampened the productivity of the knitwear sub-sector of apparel industry and intend to mar the progressive knitwear sector of the country, in general.
Production has dropped by at least 10 percent during the last one month, say industry insiders.
Industry experts relate this decrease to price-rise of yarn; they also feared that the productivity of knitwear drop sharply by 25 percent in the coming three months if government does not intervene.
Knitwear exporters have urged the Government to reopen Benapole land port on urgent basis for importing yarns from India.
At present, local market price of knitwear yarn is quoted at US $2.65 per kg, which stood at $2.20 three weeks back, say exporters. They added that the yarn-price soared by 45 cents per kg within 25 days.
As a result of yarn producers failing to deliver to knit wear makers, knitwear exporters will not meet their delivery schedules, which will ultimately hurt the knitting industry at its most opportune time, fear exporters.
