Economic turmoil does not deter new exporters

Despite the economic turmoil, that too in its key overseas market; the US which was the epicenter of the economic crisis, the figure of number of exporters from Peru grew in 2009.

According to PromPeru, the agency which helps promote exports, the number of exporting companies grew to 2,072 in the previous year.

Of this figure 60.3 percent of the companies exported goods less than US $100,000 while the rest had figures ranging between $100,000 and $100 million.

Most of the items of exports were textiles and apparels like cotton t-shirts 38.2%, blouses 9.5%, tank tops 8.9% and shirts 3.4% and 74.3 percent of these goods had cotton as raw material.

Export sales of textile and apparel products made from alpaca fibre touched $93 million in 2009.
