New Zealand's apparel imports from Vietnam have seen an increase of more than 84 per cent over the last six years. The trade rose from $38.043 million in 2018 to $70.163 million in 2023. The inbound shipments increased to $44.164 million in 2019 but then fell to $39.026 million in 2020. Subsequently, the imports surged to $53.259 million in 2021 and $67.891 million in 2022, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.
China and Bangladesh were ahead of Vietnam in terms of being the largest apparel suppliers to New Zealand. While apparel imports from Bangladesh remained positive, those from China, the largest supplier, experienced a downward trend.
Trade data from TexPro revealed that trousers and shorts dominated New Zealand's apparel imports from Vietnam, accounting for 31.26 per cent of the total in the last year. Additionally, the shares of shirts, jerseys, innerwear, T-shirts, coats, and jackets & blazers were 12.53 per cent, 8.47 per cent, 8.08 per cent, 7.67 per cent, 6.04 per cent, and 5.88 per cent, respectively, in 2023.
