US apparel imports from Turkiye reach $445 mn in Jan-May 2023

The United States imported apparel valued at $445.707 million from Turkiye in the first five months of 2023. This accounted for 1.36 per cent of the total apparel imports of $32.839 billion. Recent trade data reveals that US’ apparel imports from Turkiye experienced significant growth post the pandemic in 2020. However, like many other countries, trade dipped this year due to the US grappling with high inflation and economic issues. 

During January-May 2020, apparel imports from Turkiye were valued at $232.349 million, marking a decrease of 15.77 per cent compared to the $257.727 million during the same period the previous year. These imports surged by 51.26 per cent during the same timeframe in 2021 and rose again by 30.83 per cent in 2022, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro. 

Imports peaked at $351.298 million in January-May 2021 post the outbreak of COVID-19. They further grew by 30.83 per cent to reach $459.593 million in the corresponding period of 2022. Nevertheless, there was a slight drop of 3.02 per cent, settling at $445.707 million in January-May 2023. 

In 2022, the US' total apparel imports stood at $105.220 billion. Turkiye's contribution to this figure was 1.06 per cent, amounting to $1,116.196 million. 

According to TexPro, trousers and shorts dominated the apparel imports in January-May 2023. These products comprised 28.74 per cent of the total imports, valuing $125.289 million. Among the top five imported items, shirts made up 11.85 per cent, jerseys 11.55 per cent, dresses 11.13 per cent, and T-shirts 6.24 per cent of the total.
