In 2022, Vietnam was the fourth largest supplier, falling behind China, Italy, and Indonesia, with imports valued at $196.371 million or 8.42 per cent of Singapore's total apparel imports, which stood at $2,331.366 million, according to TexPro Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool.
Notably, there was a slight decline of 1.34 per cent in imports from Vietnam in the first five months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, when the figure was $68.117 million. Historical data from TexPro shows that the imports were valued at $57.062 million in January-May 2019, $56.071 million in January-May 2020, and $64.883 million in January-May 2021. In annual terms, the trade amounted to $157.690 million in 2019, $138.346 million in 2020, and $151.620 million in 2021.
An analysis of the types of apparel imported reveals that Singapore spent $15.537 million on trousers and shorts, which constituted 24.07 per cent of total imports in January-May 2023. Other significant categories included shirts at $12.956 million (20.07 per cent), T-shirts at $12.344 million (19.13 per cent), innerwear at $7.342 million (11.38 per cent), and jerseys at $5.075 million (7.86 per cent).
