Vietnam’s total apparel exports were valued at $19.699 billion in the first eight months of this year, down from $21.642 billion during the same period last year. However, Vietnam’s apparel exports to Japan saw a slight increase, rising from $2.618 billion in January-August 2023 to $2.684 billion in the same period of 2024. Japan consistently remains the second-largest market for Vietnam's apparel exports, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.
In 2023, Vietnam exported $4.102 billion worth of apparel to Japan, representing 12.60 per cent of its total apparel exports of $32.571 billion for that year. In 2022, Vietnam's total apparel exports were valued at $37.482 billion, with $3.959 billion, or 10.56 per cent, destined for Japan.
Although Vietnam’s exports of home textiles are modest compared to its garment exports, Japan is the largest market for Vietnam in this sector. Vietnam’s home textile exports to Japan stood at $349.290 million, representing 28 per cent of its total home textile exports of $1,247.248 million for the same period, according to TexPro.
In 2023, total home textile exports amounted to $2,056.041 million, with $598.581 million, or 29.11 per cent, exported to Japan. In 2022, Vietnam’s home textile exports were valued at $2,416.064 million, with $656.556 million, or 27.17 per cent, going to Japan.
Vietnam’s fabric exports to Japan were valued at $23.665 million in January-August 2024, representing 3.15 per cent of its total fabric exports of $751.818 million during this period. In 2023, fabric exports to Japan were valued at $35.472 million, making up 2.88 per cent of Vietnam's total fabric exports of $1,232.091 million. As a developed nation, Japan is not a significant buyer of Vietnamese fabric.
