Keeping in view the huge demand for jute in Pakistan, high commissioner of Bangladesh to the country Tarik Ehsan recently requested Islamabad to withdraw import duty on jute products from Bangladesh. He made the request at a jute exhibition organised by the Bangladesh consulate in Karachi. Items showcased included shoes, bags, handbags and floor mats.

Pakistan had played a major role in the development of Bangladeshi jute industry, Ehsan added.

Deputy high commissioner Noor-e-Helal Saifur Rahman said in 2016, jute exports from Bangladesh were valued at $960 million, which increased to $1.2 billion in 2017, whereas in 2018, the figure moved up further to $1.35 billion, according to Pakistani media reports. (DS)
