India’s jute exports have grown by nearly 24 per cent since 2014, according to textiles minister Smriti Irani, who has been urging the sector to reduce dependence on government orders and opt for product diversification to boost exports. She noted a steady improvement in the health of the jute sector on the sidelines of Artisan Speak & Jute Expo in Kolkata.

The expo is a textiles outreach initiative of the textile ministry.

She requested the jute industry to consider the welfare of farmers and workers, according to Indian media reports.

The four-day expo was attended by delegates from 14 nations. (DS)
