India has expanded the scope of anti-dumping duty imposed on jute yarn and sacking bags by including more Bangladeshi firms to protect domestic players from cheap shipments from there. A recent Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs notification said it has amended a January 2017 notification to include more companies under the ambit of anti-dumping duties.

The duties are in the range $97.19-$125.21 per tonne. Anti-dumping duty is imposed on specific companies of a country.

India’ Directorate General of Trade Remedies had initiated a probe in 2015 into imports of these products following complaint from domestic players.

West Bengal is the major player in the jute industry, employing 3.5-4 lakh people.
