N Andhra jute industry seeks government support

North Andhra jute representatives have sought government's support to stop migration of people from Vizianagaram to neighbouring districts by releasing bailout package for clearance of statutory payments. This will help local jute industry grow as it is facing tough competition from the raw and finished products imported from Bangladesh at a lower cost.

The situation is such that the local industries are now facing difficulty in selling their products at a competitive price as jute products from Bangladesh are available at a much lower rate in the Indian market, according to a leading daily.

To restore the local jute industry, the North Andhra jute representatives are also seeking incentives and deferment of taxes from the government.

The imported low-priced jute products have forced nearly 20 industries in North Andhra to decrease their production, while some of them have even closed their operations. This has affected the workers tremendously as in the last two years they lost their wages and other benefits. (RR)
