Jute farmers and traders have demanded that the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) pay up their arrears of Tk11 crore before Eid-ul-Azha.
Workers who come from different parts of the country under the banner of 'Bandhakrito Adamjee Jute Mills Ltd Krishak O Khudra Pat Beboysayee Paonadar Samity', laid a seige on Motijheel road for an hour.
They all gheraored the office of Solaiman Chowdhury, BJMC Chairman, and detained him for several hours from 9:00 am insisting that their debt be cleared before Eid.
Leaders of the 'Bandhakrito Adamjee Jute Mills Ltd Krishak O Khudra Pat Beboysayee Paonadar Samity' said their dues from to the mills stood at about Tk 44 crore prior to its closure on July 1, 2002.
The BJMC has paid Tk33 crore after the closure of the mills.
Workers relented only after the BJMC Marketing Director assured them of reimbursing their remaining sum before the Eid.
