Sources of Union Textile Ministry informed that National Jute Board (NJB) bill would be introduced in parliament shortly.

NJB would be formed by merging Jute Manufactures Development Council (JMDC) and the National Centre for Jute Development (NCJD), while Indian Jute Industries' Research Association (IJIRA) would be included as part of it.

NCJD will be wound up and will be amalgamated with JMDC as per National Jute Policy, 2005 to form NJB.

Though this amalgamation decision is awaiting Parliament approval, 16 NCJD employees are being transferred to JMDC.

NJB will function with only two bodies after its formation; one would be Jute Commissioner's office, which would act as a regulator, and the NJB.

Jute board is expected to incorporate with an export promotion council which will assist NJB as facilitator and consultant and will also help to settle down disputes under various agreements of the WTO.

NJB's focused area will be product promotion, R & D and machinery and it will try to improve overseas marketing to reach 65:35 domestic consumption and export of jute products from current 82:18 ratio within 10 years.

Only textile research association related to jute will be revamped and NJB will also be facilitated by the patenting of Indian R&D efforts.
