Jute farmers wallop bonanza

The jute farmers from the state of Orissa have apparently hit the bonanza for the second year in a string.

The surge in the market price of jute this year has made 8,000 jute cultivators noticeably thrilled and they all anticipate of reviving the losses of past years as a gain.

A boom in the market price of jute may be due to the limited production in the current year.

Many jute farmers had considered it risky to engage in jute cultivation because of pitiable monetary proceeds in the last few years.

Since then the demand became more than the supply this year, leading to a hike in the per quintal price of jute to the joy of the farmers.

Jute cultivation was done in 1,875 hectares of land this year whereas in the past more than 2,500 hectares used to have the jute crop.

Previous year, the number of farmers engaged in jute cultivation had been strikingly low although those who did plant jute raked in good money.

Barely 8,000 farmers planted jute this year, while in earlier years more than 15,000 farmers used to be engaged in jute cultivation and those who persevered struck the jack-pot.

Similar boom was observed in 1986, when a flood had destroyed major jute produce in West Bengal and Bangladesh.
